Atlantic cod

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

Cod live in shoals in colder waters and most often occurs over the continental shelf at a depth of 30-80 metres. They feed on molluscs, crustaceans and small fish.

The Atlantic cod is a strong predatory fish belonging to the family Gadidae, which grows up to 2 m in lenght and 90 kg in weight, but hunts when weighing 2-10 kg. It is characterised by a long grey-coloured body, massive head and marked lateral line. For the delicacy and taste of its meat, it is one of the most popular fish species in the world.

Haddock

Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus)

It is most often found at a depth of 40-130 metres. Similarly to other cod species, it lives in shoals and feeds on fish eggs, worms, molluscs and sometimes also on small fish.

At first sight, the haddock differs from the other cod species with a black lateral line and a large black spot, which is located under the first dorsal fin. The body of the haddock is characterised by its silvery colour and it grows to 50 cm in length and 2 kg in weight.

Pollock

Pollock (Pollachius virens)

Pollock is a predator feeding mainly on crustaceans, herring and small fish. It lives in shoals and can most frequently be found near the bottom at a depth of about 200 metres.

It features a rather dark silvery colour and an almost straight white lateral line. Pollock reaches up to 120 cm in length and 30 kg in weight, but hunts when weighing 2-10 kg. It is popular for its specific taste and the firm consistency of its meat, thanks to which it is suitable for frying.

Red fish

Red fish (Sebastes norvegicus)

It lives in shoals and is found at depths of around 100-1,000 metres in areas far from the shore. It feeds on prawns, crustaceans and other fish.

The red fish is characterised by its pink body, which in adulthood turns to red with golden reflections, and belongs in the order Scorpaeniformes. On average, it grows to 50 cm in length and its body is covered with sharp scales.

Ling

Ling (Molva molva)

In adulthood the ling can be found at a depth of 100-200, but it occurs even deeper. They feed on shellfish, cuttlefish and other fish.

The ling is characterised by a long eel-like body of a brown-grey colour, a flat head and a big barbell on the chin. It is classified in the class Actinopterygii and on average, it grows to around 2 m in length.

Blue ling

Blue ling (Molva dypterygia)

It lives at depths of around 100-200 metres, but sometimes occurs in areas 600 metres below sea level. Mainly feeds on fish and small sea animals.

Just like the common ling, the blue ling belongs in the class Actinopterygii. It features a long slender body of a dark grey colour with blue-grey reflections. On average, it grows to 70-110 cm in length.

Monk fish

Monk fish (Lophius piscatorius)

It is found at depths near the sea bottom. It feeds on rays, eels and other fish species, which it attracts thanks to a luminescent projection on the front part of its dorsal fin.

Monk fish is a predatory fish brown in colour, characterised by its distinct broad head that makes up 2/3 of the total weight of its body. Except for the spine, the body of the fish does not contain any bones. Monk fish is very popular for its delicate meat.

Lemon sole

Lemon sole (Microstomus kitt)

The lemon sole is found in areas with a dominating rocky bottom surface, at depths of up to 200 metres. It feeds on various crustacean and mollusc species.

Just as the other members of the family Pleuronectidae, the lemon sole also swims with one of its sides to the sea bottom. Its disc-shaped body is mottled with small flecks of a dark red-orange colour. The lemon sole reaches 30 cm in length and weighs 400 g on average.

Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa)

The plaice lives in cold waters near a sandy or muddy sea bottom at depths of around 50-150 metres, where it feeds on worms, crustaceans and small fish.

The body of the European plaice is characterised by a flat disc-like shape and yellow-brown colour with smallish red spots. On average, it grows to 25-40 cm in length.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

It is found at depths to 200 metres and feeds predominantly on crustaceans and smaller fish.

The salmon is a predatory fish of a silvery colour that grows to 70-90 cm in length. The delicate meat of the salmon has an orange-red colour and specific taste, for which it now ranks among the most popular fish species ever.

Atlantic catfish

Atlantic catfish (Anarhichas lupus)

Catfish feed mainly hard-shelled creatures whose body crunches with their sharp teeth. It occurs at depths of 400 m.

Predatory fish of the family catfish is characterized by a large head, wide mouth and very sharp teeth that are capable to bite even a finger or a shoe. Catfish reaches up to 1.5 m wide and up to 18 kg in weight.

Green sea urchin

Green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis)

It occurs in tidal areas dominated by rocky bottom surface. They feed on seaweed and small marine animals.

Sea urchin is characterized by a rounded body, whose diameter is up to 87 mm. The body is covered with long urchin spines , which serves as a defense and movement.
